Service Dog Foundations
Core obedience, focus, and impulse control that every working dog needs before task and public access work begins.
- Loose-leash walking & reliable recall
- Settle, stay & duration behaviors
- Neutrality around distractions
CODA Training partners with handlers to develop confident, task-ready service dogs through individualized, reward-based instruction grounded in ADA standards.
Every dog and every handler is different. We design programs around the team in front of us — never a one-size-fits-all curriculum.
We build reliable behaviors through reward-based methods that protect the dog's confidence and the trust between dog and handler.
You're part of every session. We coach you alongside your dog so the partnership keeps working long after training ends.
Each program maps to specific, disability-related tasks with clear milestones — so progress is measurable, not guesswork.
From early foundations to advanced public access, our programs meet you where you and your dog are today.

CODA Training is a dedicated service animal training practice serving the Washington Metropolitan area. We exist to make the path to a reliable service dog clearer, kinder, and grounded in real standards.
We believe a service dog partnership is one of the most meaningful relationships a person can have. That's why we never rush it, never use intimidation, and never overstate what training can promise.
Straight answers to the questions handlers ask us most.
Under the Americans with Disabilities Act, a service dog is individually trained to perform specific tasks directly related to a person's disability. There is no federal registry or required certification — what matters is genuine task training and reliable behavior. We focus entirely on that real-world standard.
No — and we want to be upfront about why. The ADA does not recognize or require any certificate, ID card, or registration. We provide legitimate training and honest documentation of the work completed, never paperwork that implies official status that doesn't exist.
Often, yes. Many of our teams start with a dog they already love. We begin with a temperament and aptitude assessment to make sure service work is a fair and realistic fit for that individual dog before building a plan together.
It varies widely with the dog, the tasks involved, and how much you practice between sessions. Quality service dog training is measured in months, not weeks. We'll give you an honest timeline estimate after the initial assessment.
We work with handlers throughout the Washington Metropolitan area. Reach out with your location and goals and we'll let you know how we can best support your team.
Tell us a little about you and your dog. We'll follow up with honest guidance on the right next step — no pressure, no obligation.
